Species Amaryllis and Species of Hippeastrum



Though several species of Amaryllis have been reported, only few of them are under cultivation. Amaryllis belladonna is grown widely in gardens of tropical and subtropical regions.

Some of the important species are: Amaryllis angustifolia, Amaryllis berbata, Amaryllis Calyptrata, Amaryllis carreiemis, Amaryllis cybister, Amaryllis carreiemis, Amaryllis cybister. Amaryllis elegans, Amaryllis enansiae, Amaryllis forgetti, Amaryllis leopoldii. Amaryllis miniata, Amaryllis moreliana, Amaryllis papitio, Amaryllis psittacina, Amaryllis reginae, Amaryllis striata, Amaryllis traubii and Amaryllis viridiflora.

The important species of Hlppeastrum are : Hippeastrum aulicum, Hippeastrum brasilianum, Hippeastrum doraniae, Hippeastrum equestre, Hippeastrum flammigerum, Hippeastrum hybridum, Hippeastrum pardinum, Hippeastrum pratesme, Hippeastrum procerum, Hippeastrum reticulatum, Hippeastrum rutilum, Hippeastrum stylosum, and Hippeastrum vittatum. Some of the species are synonyms of Amaryllis spp.

Cultivars



The cultivars grown in gardens are hybrids or their derivatives. Continuous breeding and careful selection over a long period have resulted in production of the present day cultivars with numerous shades of the finest and bright colour and also possessing other desirable characters like longer flower duration and increased flower size, etc.

Cultivars of Amaryllis
