Introduction

Bird of paradise flower (Strelitzia reginae) is an evergreen perennial herbaceous plant grown in the regions having moderate climate. The brilliant colour and unusual appearance of the flowers have made it exceptionally popular as cut-flower. Plants are, therefore cultivated in many parts of the world in order to produce inflorescence for both local and export markets.

Bird-of-paradise occupies a place of pride in the garden and is an important choice for landscaping. In the background of a herbaceous border, in front of a shrubbery or along the side of a tank of lilypool, a highly delightful effect is developed when in flower. It can also be grown in pots.

Strelitzia is indigenous to South Africa. The name comes from remarkably shaped and coloured flower clusters, like the crested head of a bird.

The genus is named in honour of Queen Charlotte Sophia, the wife of King George III, who was also the Duchess of Meaklinburg-Strelitz, a patron of botany.
